When I think back on my elementary school days, there is one classroom activity that I remember vividly: performing a commercial for TIDE. Mrs. Frazier, my 4th grade teacher, was teaching us about persuading others. We chose one commercial to reenact, and I remember gathering laundry, a basket, and a box of detergent to perform my commercial The most persuading I did, was persuading my mother to PURCHASE TIDE, because we used the store brand detergent!
When I began teaching persuasive/opinion writing a few years ago, I kept thinking about that activity. As an homage to my 4th grade teacher, I began including an oral toy review in my lessons for 1st graders. I believe it gives the children a unique opportunity to practice language skills, as well as use the opinion/persuasive skills we use in writing. *Please allow your child to bring 1 toy on Wednesday, March 15. Each child will be filmed performing a toy review which includes: *a self-introduction and toy introduction *3 reasons for choosing the toy * a star rating for the toy review (up to 5 stars) I can't wait to hear these, and my hope is that we can view these at our spring writing celebration later this year! *Peace. Love, First Grade!
